ASIAC thanks Mark Segal and the dmhFund for their generous support of our services. The Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld Fund awarded ASIAC a $5,000 LGBT Community Service Grant last night at an event at the William Way Community Center. This grant will support our Education Materials and Research. Asians & Pacific Islanders (A&PI) have the highest rate of increase in new HIV infections in the nation and still have a relatively low prevalence rate. This means that we have an opportunity to prevent an emergency among the A&PI population if we act now to raise awareness among this largely non-English speaking population. The dmhFund grant will support our efforts to do this through education events that will introduce anti-stigma messages created around the country for the past 20 years targeting A&PI language speakers. Additionally, this grant will also support activities related to our ongoing Philadelphia A&PI HIV Needs Assessment. These events will take place leading up to and around May 19th which is National A&PI HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. "AIDS in Philly: Let's Talk About It" explores some of the ways ASIAC and other organizations are working to prevent the spread of HIV in our community. Prevention is key to fighting this epidemic, and talking about risk factors plays a big part in staying safe.
"AIDS in Philly: AIDS Fund Responds" is the first installment of the "AIDS in Philly" series. Serving as an introduction to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Philadelphia, "AIDS Fund Responds" explores how AIDS Fund is working to raise awareness and funding for local HIV/AIDS service organizations.
"AIDS in Philly: Know Your Status" highlights some of the reasons why everyone should get tested, as well as misconceptions about what it means to be HIV positive. Getting tested is the only way to know your status and the first step to staying healthy.
"AIDS in Philly: We Care" focuses on local organizations providing vital care to people living with HIV/AIDS in our community. From housing to medical care to meals to legal services, these organizations offer a continuum of services to help overcome the challenges created by HIV/AIDS.
URGENT APPEAL – Please show your support for ASIAC!
Dear Friends,
Asians and Pacific Islanders have the highest rate of increase in new HIV infections in the nation and are less likely to have been tested for HIV.With your help we can take the bold steps necessary to ensure that our services are state of the art and stop HIV from becoming an epidemic among Asians & Pacific Islanders in Philadelphia.
For the past sixteen years, ASIAC has been on the front line of HIV prevention for the A&PI community and private financial support from the community has been a keystone in making that happen. That support has helped ASIAC maintain its core programs:free HIV/AIDS testing and prevention programs, and culturally and linguistically appropriate medical case management services for Asians, Pacific Islanders and other immigrants who are diagnosed with HIV or AIDS in the Philadelphia area.
In the past year, ASIAC performed more than 250 HIV tests and provided linguistic services in over a dozen languages.Almost all of ASIAC’s clients live near or below the federal poverty level.
ASIAC is the one of the few organizations in Philadelphia that serve the HIV-related health care needs of Asians and other immigrants who are Limited English Proficient.Unfortunately, budget cuts and changes to federal regulations have severely diminished ASIAC’s resources such that core programs are now under-funded.In response, ASIAC has slashed expenses, cut salaries, and squeezed every dollar that we have to meet our mission and serve our clients.Nonetheless we are still making progress which you can follow on our blog link to blog
ASIAC urgently needs your help now. Please seriously consider making a donation of $500, $100 or $50 today, even if you have already made a donation or have attended our previous fundraisers. To donate online, please go to http://www.asiac.org/donate-getting-involved/donate.html.You may make out a check to ASIAC and mail it to 340 North 12th Street, Suite 205, Philadelphia PA 19107.
Protect yourself; get tested for HIV and always use condoms.
